As per the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM), in the year 2022, a grim tally of 1,457 displaced individuals met tragic fates or vanished throughout the Americas. Disturbingly, among these cases, 686 were officially documented as occurring along the USA-Mexico border. The perilous landscapes of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts, which span the US border, have proven particularly treacherous for those attempting this journey.

Regrettably, these estimations, while alarming, may not fully reflect the true extent of the crisis due to the scarcity of data from official sources. Increasingly, individuals who have chosen not to pursue legal avenues for entering the United States are turning to alternative, perilous routes facilitated by criminal cartels. The growing influence of social media has played a pivotal role in popularizing these risky journeys, attracting people from diverse corners of the world to embark on the dangerous path of attempting illegal entry into the USA. This development is a concerning trend and raises significant humanitarian and security concerns.
